Import Crystal Reports

This document describes how to migrate reports from Crystal Reports to Impact Reports. It introduces the ways in which this can be done, and details the main requirements and limitations of the import process. To learn how you can create new reports using the Impact Report Designer, see Creating a New Report

Automatic Conversion

In most cases, you can automatically convert your reports from Crystal Reports  formats to Impact Reports. To do this, download Impact Report Designer 5.0.4.1 or better which is available on our site

Migrating to Impact Reports

You can convert reports that were created using  Crystal Reports  to the Impact Reports format, using the report importer available in the main report designer application. A disadvantage of this approach is that you can only migrate your reports one at a time, rather than a batch.

To import a third-party report to the Impact Reports, do the following.

  1. Open Impact Report Designer and log into your Act database.

  2. Click the IMPORT icon on the top ribbon.

  3. In the invoked dialog, locate the file that contains a report to be imported (*.ZIP for Impact reportss and *.rpt for Crystal Reports).

  4. If you are importing from Crystal Reports the conversion process will start automatically.

If you are importing from Impact reports, you will be prompted to choose a report to import.

After performing these steps, the Impact Report Designer automatically creates a report that approximates its third-party counterpart to the greatest possible degree. Then, it may be required to additionally customize the created layout, so that it completely meets your requirements (e.g., modify report layout, customize the appearance of its elements, or review data binding settings).

Requirements and Limitations

Due to differences between Impact Reports and other reporting products, the extent to which your converted report will match the original depends upon the layout of the initial report. However, you can modify the resulting Impact Report to achieve the desired results. Please note the following requirements and restrictions when importing reports from any of the following reporting systems:

Importing from Crystal Reports

Requirements: Crystal Reports (the version shipped with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 or 2008) should be installed on the machine that will be used to import the reports. The following assemblies must be present in the Global Assembly Cache:

  • CrystalDecisions.Shared.dll
  • CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.dll
Impact Report Designer installer will deliver these two files into the Act plugin folder to be used if the PC does not have Crystal installed. The delivered Crystal DLL are version 13.0.7.1136.

Limitations: Images, subreports, cross-tabs and expressions are not imported.
