ISSUE: Working with ACT! synced databases and Smart Notes for ACT! (SNFA)
If you have a situation where you have remote databases which sync with a central database, you can still use SNFA.
Here is how it works...
Install SNFA on the 'Server Database'
In order to install on the server database, you don't have to be physically on the server machine, you just have to be on a machine that as ACT! client installed with the ability to log into the ACT! server database.
Install SNFA on a workstation connected to the server databse
Create the Manual Notes on the server
Create the SNFA custom table that will hold the manual notes. Once you have created the custom SNFA tables, they will propagate to the remote clients via the data sync and will allow notes created by any one workstation to be synced with any other remote workstation. The remote workstation will then be able to create notes which will then be synced with the central network database.
Create conditional notes while attached to the server database
When you create conditional rules, they are created and stored in XML files located in a sub folder ...\databasename_main-database files\durkin\smartnotes
The SNFA folder contains the files that define the conditional rules.
Copy the SNFA folder from the server to the remote clients
This folder, if you would like to copy the rules designed from the server to the remote clients, will have to be manually copied to the database files folder on the clients. Future versions of SNFA will manage this sync automatically.
Alternatively, if you did NOT want to sync the conditional rules files, then individual users could add their own rules. However most will want to maintain one set of rules at the server and copy them to the remote client workstations. If this is the case, remote users should be told not to add individual rules as they will be overwritten when the XML files are manually synced.
